Sustainability

In our array of services and operations, sustainability is one of Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Services top priority.
Our aim is to help our clients achieve their sustainability objectives and to become an exemplary sustainable organisation, based on the three balanced and interlocking elements of: strong economic growth; social inclusivity; and fundamental improvements in environmental management and use of resources.
To help our clients and our various businesses put sustainable development thinking into practice, we have appointed a sustainability manager and set up a working group to identify, communicate and implement best practice across all our operations.
We have already taken significant steps in promoting sustainability across our business and will continue to build on our achievements:
- We promote the use of renewable resources and endeavour to minimise waste. The message to all employees and our supply chain partners is clear: we must Rethink, Reduce, Re-use, Recycle and Remove.
- We set targets and key performance indicators and monitor progress. These are communicated monthly to the Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Services Board and contracts management teams.
- We currently operate systems, which are registered to the international standard ISO 14001.
- We are recycling 'waste' road materials from term maintenance operations.
- We are setting up a carbon footprint working group to measure, monitor and implement our carbon footprint reduction programme including an employee travel plan, switching our electricity supply to renewal energy and low emission vehicles.
- We have a fleet of dual-fuel vehicles in North Yorkshire and are testing electric vehicles in Westminster.
- We sponsoring road safety initiatives in local communities.
- In 2007, we set all our office printers to default double-sided printing.
- In 2007, we started sending our old company mobile phones for use in the third world. Proceeds were donated to Balfour Beatty charity NCH.
