Developing You

Our dedicated Learning & Development and Training teams are committed to providing the support you need to develop your skills, wherever and whatever that may entail. If you wish to learn and develop, we want to help.

We conduct annual Personal Development Reviews with each of our employees in which you and your Line Manager set personal goals and identify training needs. We support a range of courses and training both in-house and externally; from ‘toolbox talks’ on the job to post-graduate courses at college, we aim to provide support for all career routes.

We believe in growing our own talent; we currently have 4 bespoke development programmes:

  • Graduate – this is a three-year programme that supports our yearly intake of graduates to become well-rounded professionals. As well as ‘on the job’ development through involvement and contribution to active projects, there is also a programme of development, including courses in commercial awareness, health and safety and communication skills. • Apprenticeship – a three-year scheme that gives apprentices the chance to learn a broad range of industry skills through on-site experience and structured off-site training. An invaluable chance to learn the skills needed for a career in highways. Find out more
  • Staff – We provide the best support to our people who have the drive and capability to develop and progress. This two-year programme consists of 3 modules a year that can help operatives become supervisors and supervisors become agents.
  • Management – this programme is to prepare our people to move in to first line management positions when they become available. The 6 module programme covers the various aspects of management from basic planning and programming to resource management and cost control.

As well as providing soft skills learning (e.g. use of IT packages) we are moving towards a more flexible learning approach with the introduction of our E-learning scheme.
