Lin, Graduate Trainee (Estimating)

I graduated from the University of Warwick with an MSc degree in Process Engineering and Business Management. I wanted to find a company that would provide me with good opportunities and the right tools for further career development. I joined Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Services as a graduate Quantity Surveyor in 2006. Since joining, I have been involved in a wide variety of projects, and am impressed by all the opportunities the company has provided.

Working in the graduate development programme has given me valuable experience in different areas of the business and has certainly contributed to my future career development.

Initially I worked as a regional Assistant Quantity Surveyor, taking care of the central region of the Highways Agency Area 3 contract. Responsibilities have included preparing work applications and commercial reports for schemes and day work; creating work orders for subcontractors and job enquires.

I am currently working in the Business Development Department in Central Office, assisting with the estimating and commercial team. I have been involved in several estimating works, including schemes for the Local Authority, major Highway Agency contract bids and Street Lighting contracts. I also to look after our Wokingham and Windsor Maidenhead contracts, in terms of commercial feedback reviewing. Working as an estimator is a great challenge that I enjoy, since it requires a broad range of skills, knowledge and experience.

The working environment at Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Services is always a pleasant experience, whether I am on site or in the office. I always receive vital support and help from others, and although deadlines are sometimes tight, people are always working together to make sure the job gets done. Outside of work, there are also plenty of opportunities from all sorts of society activities, I play for the company football team and do other activities raising money for charities.
