Going Green in Westminster
14 May 2008
Westminster TranServ, the Balfour Beatty and Mouchel Group joint venture which provides highways maintenance, street lighting and management technology services to Westminster City Council, has boosted its ‘green fleet' with a Smith Newton 7.5t truck with a tipper body, the largest electric truck of its kind in the world.
The latest ‘zero carbon emissions' arrival, powered by four sodium nickel chloride 278v batteries and a 120kw induction motor, will be used for general highway maintenance duties on roads across central London.
The Smith Newton motors along at a top speed of 50mph and can travel up to 100 miles from a single charge. It can be charged on board or via domestic mains. The truck's body is built from an ultra-light, totally recyclable material, and it comes with power-assisted steering, front and rear suspension, and a hydraulic brake system.
Gary Merrills, Transport & Plant Manager at Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Services, said:
"Balfour Beatty is committed to minimising our impact on the environment. With its complete lack of carbon emissions, this new vehicle is set to do just that. We look forward to using the Smith Newton in Westminster. It could well be a vehicle of choice on future contracts."
Westminster TranServ already has three environmentally friendly electric cars.
