Winning On Merit
29 May 2008
A team of six graduate trainees from Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Services, the highways management and maintenance business of Balfour Beatty plc, has finished in the top 10 per cent in a national business competition run by Loughborough University.
Merit 2008 is a construction management competition in which teams of graduates from across the country run a virtual company. The team consisted of graduates John Colyer, Philippa Brook, Lin Xie, Adrian Smith, Amarit Uppal, and Sahir Syed, and was named Road2Success.
Philippa Brook, a graduate trainee in the company's HR department, said: "'It was a great experience because it gave us all an insight into the realities of running a construction company. It also taught us a lot about ourselves, the way we work as individuals and as a team, and how individual attributes can be harnessed for team success. We are extremely pleased with our position on our first attempt at this competition but I am sure we will want to do better next year!"
