Litter Picking Good

Some of the litter picking team

Eleven colleagues from Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Services (BBIS), recently filled 15 large bags with litter as part of the company's community focused activities, to improve the aesthetics of the local area.

Items collected ranged from drink cans, cigarette packets, old paperwork, a 200-litre drum and a 25-litre plastic container.

The team gave up their free time to carry out the litter pick and focused on Finkills Way and Yafforth Road, near to their North Yorkshire County Council contract's main office in Northallerton. These roads were chosen in conjunction with Hambleton District Council, as they are particularly vulnerable to littering from passing traffic.

Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Services Development Manager, Mark Scarr said:

"The litter pick provided us with a great opportunity to support our local area and undertake a task which benefited the community."

Hambleton District Council's Street Scene Manager, John Proud said:

"Litter is a huge problem, in the UK alone some 25 million tonnes are dropped every year, most of it food and drink packaging. We are extremely grateful to organisations like Balfour Beatty Infrastructure Services, who help us to tackle the rubbish mountain."

In its contract with North Yorkshire County Council BBIS maintains the majority of North Yorkshire's county roads.
